Post Op Neck Dissection Pain Tips

Me and my son (Ashton) @ Angels
Stadium (2013)
I recently had a Radical Neck Dissection/Tonsillectomy to remove throat cancer.  I discovered a few good tips that I wanted to pass on to those who may be suffering in pain and are looking for some suggestions on how to make the pain go away.  I hope they help you like they did me.

  • I was having BAD ear pain so I tried Similisan Children’s Earache Relief drops.  I would add a few drops in the ear and top it off with some cotton.  Any brand should be fine.
  • Gargle with warm salt water as soon as you wake up for the first week.  This will keep you from clearing your throat - which will HURT.
  • My doctor prescribed Percoset and I added in a few liquid Ibuprofen capsules.  Adding the Ibuprofen really made a difference.  (I checked with them before I did this - you might want to do the same.)
  • Keep your nose clear.  I have bad allergies and sinus problems.  A couple of days after coming home I used my Astelin nasal spray and it really helped out with my pain.  I wish I would have used it sooner.
  • Drink water before going to bed.  Your throat will dry out during sleep and hydrating it before bedtime will allow you to sleep better.
  • Elevate your head when you sleep.  Tuck a few extra pillows back there and you should be OK.
